The film would have us believe that although Kuklinski viciously and sadistically murdered at least 100 people he never laid a hand on his wife Barbara. She didn’t tell me what sites she visited but I am guessing it was the online site of the UK newspaper The Telegraph and CNN.com. While my brother-in-law and I settled down to watch American Gangster with Russell Crowe as a tireless detective slowly and painfully building a case against true life Harlem drug lord Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) my sister got busy on the Net. In The Iceman, Kuklinski is depicted as a psychopath who was both a ruthless killer and a devoted family man. So casting him as real-life contract killer Richard Kuklinski seems like a no-brainer. Of course, if you’ve seen his morally conflicted government agent on HBO-TV’s Boardwalk Empire (or downright creepy roles in Bug, The Runaways and the recent Superman reboot) you already know that. Michael Shannon makes a great screen villain.
